Consequently, capacity stands to grow on the vital location for two TEN-T corridors.
The IV Rail Module project is aimed at building an entirely new intermodal facility that facilitates 750-metre trains. In 2025, the entire Quadrante Europe complex handled around 15,000 freight trains annually and 8 million tonnes of freight. It is reaching maximum capacity, according to Italian media.

By enabling the use of 750-metre trains, the IV Rail Module should raise the maximum capacity at the facility. The upgrade is also supposed to increase the number of trains handled per day by building new tracks. Verona Interporto currently has 37 main operational tracks and six support tracks across several terminals, as well as a shunting area.

The upgrade comes in expectation of the Brenner Base Tunnel opening – a vital link on the Scandinavian-Mediterranean TEN-T corridor. This opens up new opportunities for international rail freight operations and an increase in traffic. The Verona Interporto hub is also located on the Mediterranean TEN-T corridor.

TX Logistik increases services between Lübeck and Northern Italy https://www.railfreight.com/business/2024/01/23/tx-logistik-increases-services-between-lubeck-and-northern-italy/ https://www.railfreight.com/business/2024/01/23/tx-logistik-increases-services-between-lubeck-and-northern-italy/#respond Tue, 23 Jan 2024 11:15:42 +0000 https://www.railfreight.com/?p=49507 January has been a month of service upgrades for TX Logistik. The intermodal operator has increased the frequency of two services between northern Germany and Northern Italy using Lübeck as the central hub. The first one is the Lübeck-Segrate Milan service, which now runs with six weekly roundtrips instead of four. The second and more recent is the Lübeck-Quadrante Europa Verona service, which upgraded to two weekly roundtrips instead of one.
Both services are available for a variety of loading units, including trailers, containers, tank containers and NiKRASA-compatible semitrailers. The Lübeck-Verona service is also available for conventional semitrailers. According to TX Logistik, this service will also run as an ‘open train system,’ with the main customer being forwarding company Bode, also based in Lübeck.

Following a good year

TX Logistik proceeded with these two upgrades following a relatively solid performance in 2023, at least expansion-wise. Two of last year’s highlights included commencing the joint operation of the combined transport terminal Logport III in Duisburg (Ziel Terminal) alongside duisport and Samskip. The company holds a 25.1 per cent share in the joint venture established for the terminal’s operation, with duisport also holding 25.1 per cent and Samskip maintaining the lion’s share of 49.8 per cent.

The second highlight was the acquisition of Exploris Deutschland Holding, which includes companies like the HSL Logistik group, Delta Rail, and Via Cargo. This development will play an important role in streamlining the company’s network expansion, especially on the east-west axis, with more services between Germany and Poland and Czechia and Slovakia. More importantly, the acquisition helped the company increase its market share in Germany even more since it became the country’s second-largest operator.

Intermodal facility in Verona to undergo major upgrades https://www.railfreight.com/intermodal/2023/10/24/intermodal-facility-in-verona-to-undergo-major-upgrades/ https://www.railfreight.com/intermodal/2023/10/24/intermodal-facility-in-verona-to-undergo-major-upgrades/#respond Tue, 24 Oct 2023 07:48:02 +0000 https://www.railfreight.com/?p=47418 The Quadrante Europa intermodal centre in Verona, in northern Italy, will undergo a major upgrade including two new tracks, a fourth gantry crane, and a brand new intermodal terminal. The terminal plays a key role in the Italian logistics sector, as it is an intersection point between the Scandinavian-Mediterranean and the Mediterranean TEN-T Corridors.
The two new tracks and the fourth crane will be implemented at the Quadrante Europa Terminal Gate (QETG), one of the terminals in the Veronese logistics hub. The new terminal, denominated Quarto Modulo, will be equipped with eight tracks for loading and unloading freight trains and six additional ones for arrivals and departures. According to the Italian national railway holding Ferrovie dello Stato, the new Quarto Modulo will be built according to European standards. Despite no further information about this was provided, it is safe to expect that the terminal will be able to, for example, accommodate 750-metre convoys. At the current stage, in fact, the facility can only handle trains of up to 650 metres in length.

No information on costs or timetable yet

The initiative was made public a Memorandum of Understanding signed during an event celebrating the 75th anniversary of the ZAI Consortium, an association for the development of the local economy. Other than ZAI, the other signatories were QETG and Italian infrastructure manager Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI). It is not yet clear how this project will be financed or its timetable. However, last week, the Italian Ministry of Transport made available 11 million euros for the development of some intermodal terminals, including the Quadrante Europa which should get one million.

Another step towards the Brenner Base Tunnel

The railway line passing through Verona is the only one leading to the main border crossing between Italy and Austria: the Brenner Pass. Here, the Brenner Base Tunnel is expected to open in 2032, which will significantly reduce transit time and increase capacity along this axis. For this purpose, Italy is also working on the Trento bypass, closer to the border with Austria. This project, which should be commissioned in 2026, will provide access to the Brenner Base Tunnel on the Italian side.

The Quadrante Europa intermodal terminal

In 2022, the Quadrante Europa handled 15,010 trains, the vast majority of which, 13,814, were intermodal. This amounted to 780,802 TEUs and over eight million tonnes of cargo. The whole facility covers an area of 2,5 million square metres and, according to its website, is the first in Italy when it comes to combined transport volumes. Currently, the majority of the goods are moved by road, roughly 20 million yearly tonnes, while only eight go via rail. The projects included in the MoU are thus expected to boost the modal shift and decongest the very busy roads of Veneto and the rest of northern Italy. The facility can count on various national and international connections. Domestically, it has links to Bari, Brindisi, Nola, and Giovinazzo in the south, and Genoa and La Spezia in the north. Most of the international connections are to Germany, including Cologne, Ludwigshafen, Nuremberg, Lubeck, Hannover, Hamburg, Kiel, Wanne, Rostock, and Munich. Other international connections are Rotterdam, Antwerp, and Padborg.

Rail Cargo Group offers alternatives after the Gotthard Tunnel accident https://www.railfreight.com/railfreight/2023/09/14/rail-cargo-group-offers-alternatives-after-the-gotthard-tunnel-accident/ https://www.railfreight.com/railfreight/2023/09/14/rail-cargo-group-offers-alternatives-after-the-gotthard-tunnel-accident/#respond Thu, 14 Sep 2023 04:00:22 +0000 https://www.railfreight.com/?p=46280 ÖBB Rail Cargo Group offers an alternative route for rail freight transportation between Italy and Germany impacted by the Gotthard Tunnel accident. The new route will connect the German city of Wuppertal and the Italian city of Verona, which will bypass Switzerland and cross Austria instead. The Gotthard Tunnel is currently undergoing clearance and rescue work after the accident.

RCG says the Verona-Wuppertal service will “create a direct network connection without a stopover for continental flows of goods between northern Italy and the Ruhr region” and could relieve the congestion in the Tyrol area. The service operates on a three-weekly round-trip basis and will transport goods between the Sommacampagna-Sona terminal near Verona and the DUSS terminal in Wuppertal-Langerfeld.

Gotthard Tunnel accident

The Gotthard Tunnel accident occurred on Tuesday, 10 August, when a train derailed inside the tunnel. The accident has received much attention in the European rail freight world as few alternative routes are available for the traffic between Italy and Switzerland. The Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) specified that the accident was caused by an issue with the convoy and not with the infrastructure.

Clearance and rescue works in the western tube of the Gotthard Tunnel are expected to be finished by the end of September. SBB is currently working on removing the impacted wagons and locomotives, with eight railcars remaining in the tunnel waiting to be removed. After completing this task, carried out in parallel with the tunnel’s damage assessment, SBB will be able to commence reconstruction, which is not expected to be finished before 2024.

Ambrogio Intermodal’s new terminal is finally up and running https://www.railfreight.com/corridors/2023/06/19/ambrogio-intermodals-new-terminal-is-finally-up-and-running/ https://www.railfreight.com/corridors/2023/06/19/ambrogio-intermodals-new-terminal-is-finally-up-and-running/#respond Mon, 19 Jun 2023 03:01:52 +0000 https://www.railfreight.com/?p=43777 The first train left the brand new Ambrogio Intermodal’s terminal in Domegliara, near Verona, heading towards Neuss, in Germany. The terminal was inaugurated on 15 June and is expected to boost the shift to rail along the Scandinavian-Mediterranean TEN-T Corridor.
Construction for the terminal started in May 2022 and the facility was planned to start operations at the end of that year. However, some delays occurred because the terminal was not yet connected to the main rail network. The terminal covers an area of 110,000 square metres and is equipped with three tracks to handle 700-metre trains. Two reach stackers and one gantry crane are also in the terminal.

The Domegliara-Neuss train will run three times per week, allowing a connection between the northeast of Italy, the Ruhr area in Germany, and the Benelux region. This service was already running while Amborgio was waiting for the Domegliara terminal to be ready. Until now, the trains used to depart from the Valpolicella Railway Terminal, not too far from the location of the new facility. The company claimed that, with the new terminal, they are expecting to increase this service to four or five rotations per week.

Samskip adds Denmark to its Duisburg network https://www.railfreight.com/railfreight/2023/05/01/samskip-adds-denmark-to-its-duisburg-network/ https://www.railfreight.com/railfreight/2023/05/01/samskip-adds-denmark-to-its-duisburg-network/#respond Mon, 01 May 2023 09:25:51 +0000 https://www.railfreight.com/?p=42506 Samskip is consolidating its presence in Duisburg with a new rail freight service that will be starting this week connecting the German inland port with Padborg, in southern Denmark. As a spokesperson from the company mentioned, the new service will be operated by TX Logistik.
The new initiative connecting Duisburg and Padborg is being launched concurrently with a service connecting the German inland port with Padua, in northwestern Italy, always operated by TX Logistik. For the service to Padua, four weekly roundtrips are scheduled, while three are planned between Duisburg and Padborg. According to Samskip, these new services are expected to provide valid rail freight alternatives that make up for the current shortage of drivers in the European road sector.

Samskip in Duisburg

Samskip is one of the most active companies in Duisburg. Other than these new services, Samskip also launched two rail freight services from the German inland port. One to Verona, not too far from Padua, was launched a couple of weeks ago and is always operated by TX Logistik. The other one, to Macon, in France, was launched at the end of February and is operated by Delta Rail.

The company also announced in March a joint venture called Ziel Terminal with TX Logistik and duisport to operate the Logport III Terminal in Duisburg. Moreover, in October, Samskip launched a new intermodal service between the port of Rostock, in Sweden, and the German inland port in cooperation with Hector Rail.

Arcese launches ‘triangular’ service to connect four countries https://www.railfreight.com/railfreight/2023/03/17/arcese-launches-triangular-service-to-connect-four-countries/ https://www.railfreight.com/railfreight/2023/03/17/arcese-launches-triangular-service-to-connect-four-countries/#respond Fri, 17 Mar 2023 04:05:13 +0000 https://www.railfreight.com/?p=41063 Italian intermodal company Arcese has inaugurated a new rail freight service that will connect Italy, Austria, Germany, and Romania. The innovative aspect of this circular, or rather triangular, service is that it will connect four different markets, whereas traditional services only link two.
For its first phase, the service has one weekly roundtrip scheduled, but, as an Arcese spokesperson told RailFreight.com, the frequency will be doubled in the third quarter of 2023. The four destinations touched by this service are the Terminali Italia in Verona, the TSSU terminal in Hall, the Samskip Terminal in Duisburg, and the Trade Trans Terminal in Curtici. Most of the traction operations are carried out by TX Logistik, except for the sections in Romania and Hungary, entrusted to Hungarian company Gysev Cargo, as a spokesperson from TX Logistics specified.

As the Arcese spokesperson pointed out, the service is an example of modal shift from road to rail. It will be suitable for trailers and swap bodies and will involve “all sorts of goods, from automotive to e-commerce, general cargo, coils, and home appliances”, the spokesperson added. Below is the timetable for the new services.

The latest development for the company is an increase in weekly roundtrips between Rostock, in Germany, and Verona, in Italy, from four to six.
The new frequency of this service will start on 22 February, with the increase justified by the company by higher demand for trailer transportation on the rail. In addition to this route, TX Logistik has already increased the frequency of various other Germany-Italy connections on the Scan-Med Corridor.

Other key Scan-Med connections increased

Since the beginning of the year, trains connecting Leipzig with Sona, 10 kilometres from Verona, are running 10 times per week instead of the eight previously scheduled. The service connecting the Baltic Rail Gate in Lubeck and the Quadrante Europa terminal in Verona will get an additional eighth weekly roundtrip.

Image: © TX Logistik

TX Logistik also stated that its connections from Lubeck to Milan will now serve the terminal in Segrate instead of the one in Melzo. This is because Segrate is slightly closer to Milan. Moreover, from Segrate, TX Logistik can count on many connections managed by its mother company Mercitalia to reach other important Italian destinations including Rome, Naples, and Sicily.

Mercitalia and Lugo Terminal increase roundtrips in Italy https://www.railfreight.com/intermodal/2022/10/07/mercitalia-and-lugo-terminal-increase-roundtrips-in-italy/ https://www.railfreight.com/intermodal/2022/10/07/mercitalia-and-lugo-terminal-increase-roundtrips-in-italy/#respond Fri, 07 Oct 2022 04:00:33 +0000 https://www.railfreight.com/?p=36465 Mercitalia Rail (Group FS), in collaboration with Lugo Terminal, is increasing its weekly roundtrip between Verona and Giovinazzo, roughly 30 kilometres from Bari, on the southeast Italian coast. The rotations will be increased from 12 to 18 per week, as Mercitalia stated in a press release. The service connects the Quandrante Europa Interport in Verona with the Lugo Terminal in Giovinazzo.
This service was made available thanks to Mercitalia’s efforts to develop a new traction service using next-generation locomotives and wagons. The convoys involved in the service can, in fact, transport up to 1600 tonnes and reach 550 metres in length. In addition, the service is suitable for the P400 profile.

Transit time revolves around eight hours and Lugo Terminals makes available the container it owns. With this service, it is possible to transport 45-foot containers, 30-foot bulk containers, and tank containers, as a Lugo Terminal spokesperson told RailFreight.com. The new rotations will be implemented on Fridays and Wednesdays.

Mercitalia pointed out how this is another, significant step towards reaching the goals set by the European Green Deal. The new version of the service is expected to remove around 27,500 intermodal units from the road and consequently save over 1,200 tonnes of CO2 from being emitted.

The Lugo Terminal in Giovinazzo

Lugo Terminal is an Italian company that owns various rail terminals in Italy. The Lugo Terminal in Giovinazzo is spread over an area of 34,500 square metres. It is equipped with four rail tracks, three operative ones, and one used for stocking operations. The length of the tracks goes from 350 to 750 metres.

The terminal takes care of cargo handling as well as shunting operations. From the terminal, Lugo Terminal offers additional connections to Lugo and Parma, in the heart of Italy. From Verona, the company has connections to many hubs in Germany.

The spokesperson from Lugo Terminal added that the partnership with Lugo Terminal started four years ago. Mercitalia has been handling the service between Verona and Giovinazzo since January 2021.

They hid illegal immigrants on freight trains in Verona: fined and arrested https://www.railfreight.com/humaninterest/2022/09/26/they-hid-illegal-immigrants-on-freight-trains-in-verona-fined-and-arrested/ https://www.railfreight.com/humaninterest/2022/09/26/they-hid-illegal-immigrants-on-freight-trains-in-verona-fined-and-arrested/#respond Mon, 26 Sep 2022 07:59:27 +0000 https://www.railfreight.com/?p=36100 Two people in Italy were arrested and fined 1,45 million euros each for picking up illegal immigrants at the station in Verona and hiding them on freight trains headed toward Austria and Germany. The two men, both 22 years old, are regular immigrants in Italy, and have been under house arrest since February, charged with aiding and abetting illegal immigration.
The events took place between 13 September and 15 November 2021. Almost 150 illegal immigrants were hidden on freight train wagons at the intermodal terminal Quadrante Europa in Verona. The two culprits face respectively two years and two months and one year and six months of jail time.

How did the system work?

The two men would approach their customers, or victims, at the Verona Porta Nuova station. They would take them to the nearby terminal Quadrante Europa and, after the sun would set, the illegal immigrants were loaded on truck trailers that were going to be moved on rail convoys. To make sure that the wagon inspections would not arouse suspicion, the two men would cut the tarp covering the container in a way that would fool the vector inspectors.
