Webinar Recap: Can we fix the Greening Freight Package?
RailFreight.com’s latest webinar saw Silvia De Rocchi, Director Coordinator at Rail Freight Forward, and Akos Ersek, Chief Policy Advisor at UIRR, discuss the current state of the Greening Freight Package. The main takeaways are that fragmentation, whether among EU Member States or within the sector itself, often keeps things from moving forward.
De Rocchi and Ersek went through the three main pillars of the Greening Freight Package:
Combined Transport Directive, Capacity Management Regulation and Weights and Dimensions Directive. The two Directives are still being discussed by EU institutions, with the sector collectively calling for more attention to rail freight and intermodality.
The Capacity Management Regulation, on the other hand, only needs the publication in the official EU Gazette before it is officially approved. However, full implementation is not expected before 2031 and the strong role of infrastructure managers is still something that needs to be addressed.
